Scenic Riceville Advocates Riceville Heritage Celebration
(Photos courtesy of John Weakly)

About
80 Riceville residents joined together in a wonderful
afternoon of shared memories, food, stories, and
information on the valley’s natural history. The afternoon
ended with music and dancing. All this took place in the
Riceville Community Center which had been cozily decorated
in quilts, quilts and more quilts.

Thanks
to the hard work of the team responsible for coordinating
the activities, a good time was had by all. The warmth and
cheer that was generated by the strong sense of community
was clearly visible on the faces of those who gathered
there. Many new friendships were begun and old ones
strengthened.

The
event, held in a room filled with photos and memorabilia,
was merely a continuation of the community building
activities and values begun early on in the valley and
carried on down through time to the present.

Below are listed all of the many ideas residents suggested
for future community building activities.
Where
do we go from here?
I would like to
see more networking. I would like to be in touch with
people who may know about the history of my family in
Riceville.
Let's make this an annual event and bring information on
Riceville families and genealogy.
We need a general store. Maybe we could refurbish the old
one?
Historic home tours, barn tours, and cemetery tours.
Let's hear some of the ghost stories of our area.
Have an annual reunion, maybe outside in the summer where
we can dance, and I'll
help decorate.
A cooking club to share old recipes and also look at food
and how we provide food
for each other.
Students from Warren Wilson could help us with our gardens
and teach us how to
grow organically. Maybe we could have Victory Gardens--we
might need them?
I'm willing to do a presentation on invasive species we
have in the valley.
Find a way to expand the number of people who know about
SRA and events and topics of discussion. How do we
communicate?
Get more people in the business directory so that we can
get our services from our
neighbors.
